UVA Varsity Hall

Italianate-styled Varsity Hall opened on the campus of the University of Virginia in 1858 following a typhoid epidemic and served as the first University infirmary until the University Hospital was completed in 1901. Its relocation was necessary to make way for the McIntire School of Commerce’s renovations and additions, creating a 156,000-square-foot academic complex on the South Lawn.

On April 9, 2005, Varsity Hall was physically moved downhill to a new location on Hospital Drive, between Randall and Cobb Halls. The building’s move was featured on the national television show “Mega Moves” on The Learning Channel.

Hurt & Proffitt provided all surveying of the original and relocation sites, and the move/street route; all engineering for existing and relocation sites, preparation, and utility reconnect plan; geotechnical investigation for new foundation; and duct bank construction administration.
