U.S. Route 58

U.S. Route 58 is a major east-west artery that crosses Virginia’s entire southern border, from Kentucky to the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches some 680 miles, making it the state’s longest road.

Because this road is so important to Southside Virginia, the Virginia Department of Transportation has embarked on a long-term improvement program to the road. This historically two-lane road is being upgraded to four lanes wherever possible.

In the mountainous Carroll, Patrick, and Floyd counties in Southwest Virginia, Hurt & Proffitt’s surveyors provided all route location services for the design of more than 18 miles of near road.

And we did it in the dead of winter – lots of snow and fog – and in some of the toughest terrain in that part of the state. All in all, more than 15,000 hours of work were completed in 12 weeks.

We moved mountains. Almost literally.
