James River Bridge, Lynchburg - Amherst

As part of the new U.S. Route 29 bypass around the City of Lynchburg, there had to be built a new bridge across the James River. Actually, two bridges.

Hurt & Proffitt’s surveyors provided construction stakeout for the 2,300 feet of lanes spanning the river. Each of the two bridges has 13 piers and two abutments. The bridges are some 80 feet above the water. (Also included on this project was construction stakeout for more than 6,600 feet of four-lane highway.)

Hurt & Proffitt’s surveyors also provided a network of reference points on the ground from which the bridges were constructed.

This new James River bridge is but one of many spans in Virginia that our surveyors have helped make possible.
