Academy of Music Theater

The Academy of Music Theater is an historic 900-seat performing arts
center in downtown Lynchburg, VA Its $17 million renovation and
expansion has been one of the most significant urban undertakings in
the city in many years.
In the first few decades following the Academy’s 1904 opening, such legends as Sarah Bernhardt, George M. Cohan, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and violinist Efrem Zimbalist graced its stage. In the mid-1950s, the stage went dark, sat empty, and fell into disrepair until a community movement to restore it was launched at the century’s end.
Now, the Academy is attracting modern legends like Rita Coolidge, the Canadian Brass, Bea Arthur, Arlo Guthrie, and Ben Vereen, just to name a few.
Hurt & Proffitt provided all surveying (topo, boundary, construction), site planning, stormwater management, and utility design for the Academy’s renovation and expansion project.
