James River Bridge

James River Bridge

Location: Amherst, VA  Project Type: Roadways

As part of the new U.S. Route 29 bypass around the City of Lynchburg, there had to be built a new bridge across the James River. Actually, two bridges. Each of the two bridges has 13 piers and two abutments. The bridges are some 80 LF above the water. This new James River Bridge is but one of many spans in Virginia that our surveyors have staked out.

Hurt & Proffitt’s surveyors provided construction stakeout for the 2,300 LF of lanes spanning the river and construction stakeout for more than 6,600 LF of four-lane highway.  Hurt & Proffitt’s also provided a network of reference points on the ground from which the bridges were constructed.
