DGIF – Lawnes Creek Replacement Dock and Pier

DGIF - Lawnes Creek Replacement Dock and Pier

Location: Surry County, VA  Project Type: State Agencies

Hurt & Proffitt provided work for Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) in the brackish water of Lawnes Creek in Surry County, Virginia, where the creek entered the James River. The site was subject to normal wear and tear, marine life attack, and periodic high wave action from northeasters, tropical storms, and occasional hurricanes.

The goal of the project was to provide a dock and pier that are made completely of man-made or composite materials. The piles to support the wave screen, dock, and pier are fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) by Pearson Pilings.

The project included replacing the 60’ long boarding dock and the addition of a 32’ long courtesy pier to improve loading and unloading times at the boat ramp. The project also included a new section of concrete pavement to connect the existing concrete ramp and the asphalt pavement turn-around at the top of the hill. The new pavement improves vehicle traction and reduces soil erosion and sediment runoff into the creek. Hurt & Proffitt provided complete Joint Permit Application development and follow-through to approval by all permitting agencies.

This project received a national award for design and construction through the States Organization for Boating Access (SOBA). This dock was the 2010 recipient for outstanding project mid-size access.
